RUBIO REFLECTS ON THE 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 9/11 ATTACKS

Miami, FL – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released the following statement today, the 15th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks: “On this day 15 years ago, the United States was attacked by radical Islamic terrorists in a shocking, coordinated display of barbaric and brutal mass violence. Americans responded as Americans do, with bravery, selflessness, patriotism, and sacrifice. The heroes of that day – men and women at the Pentagon, in New York City and the Pennsylvania sky – will never be forgotten. We remember and honor the first responders, police officers, firefighters, service members, and everyday citizens who rushed to the aid of their fellow countrymen, because they represent what is best about our country. “Since that day, America has been at war with an evil ideology that despises freedom and basic human rights. In places like Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and some places that will never be known, our nation has lost sons, daughters, fathers and mothers as they fought to keep us safe. “Americans have also lost friends and loved ones in cities like Boston, Chattanooga, Fort Hood, Little Rock, San Bernardino and Orlando. The threat of small groups of jihadists and lone individuals inspired by al Qaeda or ISIS persists, which is why we must remember what happened on 9/11 and why we must remain vigilant. “We are grateful for those in the intelligence community, diplomatic service and our military who are on front lines of this battle. We must make sure they continue to have the tools and resources they need to do their jobs effectively, because the threats to our nation from abroad and here at home continue to grow. “So today, as we reflect on those we lost 15 years ago, and four years ago in Benghazi, let us recommit as Americans to standing united in defense of our freedoms, values, and one another.”  Rubio is a cosponsor of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Reauthorization Act.

RUBIO COMMENTS ON TODAY’S SECOND AMENDMENT VOTES

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued the following statement regarding today’s four Second Amendment-related votes: “I supported Senator Cornyn’s bipartisan proposal, because in the case of the Orlando terrorist, it would have left him on the national background check system for five years and triggered additional review when he attempted to purchase a gun. This reasonable proposal would protect law-abiding Americans by ensuring that their Second Amendment rights are not denied unless terrorism suspicions are adjudicated by a court, following actual notice and a hearing. After all, the standard for denying someone any constitutional right must be a high one; it cannot be ‘because the federal government says so.’ Continue reading

RUBIO: MEDAL OF VALOR RECIPIENTS REMIND US OF SACRIFICES LAW ENFORCEMENT FAMILIES MAKE EVERY DAY

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued the following statement after meeting with Officers Mario Gutierrez (Miami-Dade Police Department) and Niel Johnson (North Miami Police Department), the two police officers from Florida who were honored at the White House yesterday and presented with the Medal of Valor:   “Earlier this morning, thousands of law enforcement officers around the country clocked out after working another graveyard shift, which remains one of the most challenging and dangerous jobs around. They returned home to their families, most of whom sleep a little uneasy each night worried about their loved ones and then breathe a little sigh of relief each time they receive confirmation they’re ok and on their way home.   “The 13 heroes who received the Medal of Valor, including two from Florida, remind us of all that our law enforcement community – and their families – do for us every day, around the clock. They put their lives at risk in the name of public safety and justice, and we should never take them for granted.   “I was honored to meet Officer Gutierrez and Officer Johnson and was blown away by both of their stories but also by their humility in believing they were simply doing their jobs. We are lucky to have them, and the many other men and women like them, on the thin blue line each day. May God bless our law enforcement officials around the country, and may God bless their families.”   The photo below can be credited to the office of U.S. Senator Marco Rubio.   Rubio with Officers Mario Gutierrez (Miami-Dade Police Department) and Niel Johnson (North Miami Police Department):       Background:   According to the White House, the Medal of Valor is awarded to public safety officers who have exhibited exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, in an attempt to save or protect others from harm.   Below is additional information on the two Floridians honored at the White House:   Officer Mario Gutierrez (Miami-Dade Police Department, FL) for bravery and composure while enduring a violent attack. Officer Gutierrez sustained multiple stab wounds while subduing a knife-wielding assailant who attempted to set off a massive gas explosion that could have resulted in multiple fatalities.   Officer Niel Johnson (North Miami Police Department, FL) for swift and valorous action to end a violent crime spree. Officer Johnson pursued a man who had shot a Miami police officer and two other innocent bystanders, withstanding fire from an assault weapon, and apprehended the assailant.   ###
